The Smith Story Fall 2018 Wine Release Includes 3 Incredible Single Vineyard Wines
2017 Lakota's View Sémillon, Sonoma Mountain, $40, 40 cases made.
Overall, our 2017 wines are fantastic with excellent concentration of flavors. Luckily, the 8 rows of Sémillon were perfectly ripe to pick on September 28 before the horrific wine country fires began. The 2017 Lakota's View is almost a mirror image of the 2016 in all regards. Aromas of stone-fruits, like apricots and peaches with loads of citrus and lemon zest flavors. We picked grapes at sunrise at 22.4 brix ... with bursting vibrancy and juicy acidity.
With the higher elevation and cool breeze, the Sémillon had a nice long time to develop deep and complex flavors while hanging on the vine atop of Sonoma Mountain (same vineyard we pick Sauvignon Blanc from too).
Barrel aging is the big difference with our 2017 Lakota's View Sémillion release. The prior 3 years we bottled this wine in February, this time we allowed more time for the wine to rest in barrel for 11 months.More details and to purchase...
2016 Nash Mill Vineyard, Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, $58, 180 cases made.
The success of our inaugural 2015 Nash Mill Pinot Noir set the bar high...the 2016 Nash Mill does not disappoint! The 2016 brings a charming nose full of savory and floral aromas. The wine is layered with textures of dark red fruits, nervy acidity and balanced tannin structure.
The Nash Mill Vineyard is about 15 minutes NW high in the hills past Philo but not quite to Navarro. We picked this vineyard under a dark sky with a small vineyard crew and one tractor. We remember this clearly because each time we drive up or down Nash Mill Rd. Eric points at the gravel pull-out that he used as a temporary napping spot before the drive to Dutton Ranch at sunrise. The grapes were destemmed, fermented slow and long then barrel aged for 17 months before bottling.More details and to purchase...
2016 Cabernet Franc, Sonoma Valley, $40, 200 cases made.
With our 2016 Cabernet Franc we seem to be developing a classic "Smith Story Style", a style that we have fallen in love with.
Once again, our cabernet franc is heavily inspired by our deep love of this grape, especially grown in regions of the Loire Valley. Our cab franc is a "fan favorite", a delicate red wine full of elegance and finesse.
The wine exudes traditional spicy aromatic characteristics of Cabernet Franc that is full of complex fruit flavors with soft tannins and freshness which begin with the aroma and then linger on the finish. The 2016 cabernet franc demonstrates a bit more intensity than the 2015 that we really enjoy (geek out about!). More details and to purchase...
